Tony, Barbara and the salon’s customers - socialite Eleanor Shubert, antiques dealer Eddie Lawrence, and cops Nick Rossetti and Mikey Thomas - have become improv experts. The clues, topical humor and audience’s questions change daily, so with four performances a week, surprises are always just around the corner.
Paul Portner, German writer and psychologist, had written the script entitled Scherenschnitt in 1963 to use as a study of how people perceive or misperceive reality. The brief play was set in a uni-sex hair salon and revolved around the off-stage murder of a concert pianist. Subjects were asked to solve the murder based on their individual perceptions of the events and the six stereotypical characters surrounding the murder.
Soon Shear Madness developed into a show that changed every time it was performed. The actors followed a basic format and changed the specific lines along the way. Now, decades later, Shear Madness incorporates not only the contributions of the audience, but also frequent references to the latest media scandals and local news items.
The play is set today in a hairstyling salon in the city in which it plays. The landlady Isabel Czerny who lives above the shop is murdered, and every one of the actors has a reason to do her in. The audience gets involved in the action by questioning the actors and attempting to solve the crime.
